Poultry Panel Experts – Ethicists

Dr. Candace Croney, Associate Professor of Animal Sciences, Purdue University

Dr. Croney is a renowned expert in applied animal behavior, with an emphasis on animal learning, welfare and ethics. She is an associate professor of animal sciences at Purdue University. Dr. Croney has contributed to nationwide animal welfare efforts working with organizations such as the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, along with many others. She is on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the American Humane Certified program, and her research on farm animal cognition has been featured in national and international broadcast programs.

Dr. Ruth C. Newberry, Adjunct Professor, College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University

Dr. Newberry received her BS in Biology and PhD in Agriculture from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She conducted research on poultry behavior and welfare for Agriculture and Agri-food Canada before moving to Washington State University in 1996. She is now at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Her current research is focused on environmental enrichment, social behavior, and assessment of affective states. She also teaches courses on applied animal behavior and welfare.

Dr. Newberry has served as President of the International Society for Applied Ethology, Secretary of the Canadian Expert Committee on Farm Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Chair of the Poultry Science Association’s Animal Care Committee, and member of the Scientists Committee for the Canadian Code of Practice on Laying Hens. She is a member of the United Egg Producer’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Animal Welfare, and the Scientific Committee for the Certified Humane program, and is a recipient of the Poultry Science Association’s Poultry Welfare Research Award.

Dr. Paul Thompson, Professor and W.K. Kellogg Chair in Agriculture, Food and Community Ethics, Michigan State University

Dr. Thompson holds the W.K. Kellogg Chair in Agricultural, Food and Community Ethics at Michigan State University, where he serves on the faculty in the departments of Philosophy, Community Sustainability and Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics. He received his PhD in Philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and has held posts at Texas A&M University and Purdue University. Dr. Thompson’s research and teaching has focused on ethical and philosophical topics in food and agriculture. He is the author or co-author of over 200 articles in refereed journals or scholarly books. His book From Field to Fork: Food Ethics for Everyone was published by Oxford University Press in 2015, and The Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Ethics was published by Springer in 2014. Dr. Thompson has served on advisory boards at the U.S. National Research Council, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Genome Canada and for numerous academic journals, including Environmental Ethics and Agriculture and Human Values. He was a founding member and second President of the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society, which awarded him with the Distinguished Career Contribution in Research in 2013.
